Hi! I'm new to this and I'm just using Geni Basic right now. Is there a limit on how many you can merge if you import a tree? I was able to merge most everyone on one side of my family, but now when I try the other side, it takes me directly to the link for the free trial of pro. My understanding was that I could manually merge everyone with Geni Basic. Is that wrong? or am I doing something wrong?

Job Waterreus Yo can merge for free, but a basic user can only use the Geni search for profiles he/she created or profiles created by collaborators. So you will have to use an external search like Google to search for other public profile on Geni (for Google add site:geni.com to your search to limit the search to Geni)
Importing a tree on Geni can be a lot of work and time if your tree is big and has many profiles that are already on Geni. It might be less work to cancel the import for branches that are already in Geni and use SmartCopy to copy the missing information (see https://www.geni.com/projects/Connecting-to-the-Big-Tree/17983)
See https://www.geni.com/projects/Nederlandse-handleiding-GENI-voor-Dummies/13048#Engelstalige-hulp (English version bottom of the page) for some of the available help in English on using Geni.

Callie Narron Mitchell Thank you for this information! For some reason its no longer letting me merge for free, though. That's the part I can't figure out. I merged my maternal grandmother and grandfather's sides, but I haven't been able to merge my father's side, or my husband's sides. It sends me to the link to pay. IDK.

Job Waterreus The first search for a match is free, but to see others you must be Pro (you do not have to be Pro to be able to merge them if you can find them)
But you can search for those matches for free if you use an external search. Problem is that Geni will also present you with profiles that are a false match and those are more difficult to find.
As far as I have seen Geni will indicate a profile may match when these conditions are true:
- profiles have the same last name
- profiles have at least one common given name
- profiles alive times overlap (a circa date will count as plus or minus 5 years, and there is no limit in how a person can live when no specific date is given, so someone who dies after 1400 will overlap with someone born before 1900)
Public profiles you add can also be merged by others, so if you cannot find the possible duplicate there is a change another user will do the merge for you.
