I'm tempted to try the Pro Version but the basic version is such klunky software that I'm not sure the Pro version will be useable. For example, I tried to import a GEDCOM file and it won't let me import my wife's and brothers wife's families part of the file. Is it worth it?

Job Waterreus You can import all profiles from a GEDCOM.
Go to https://www.geni.com/gedcom and specify the starting profile and import a branch for that profile from your existing GEDCOM file (do NOT import the GEDCOM again, that would create a large number of duplicates).
The Pro version has as a benefit that you can use the Geni search screen to find profiles and go to them without hitting the pay wall and that you see the profiles that Geni indicates as possible matches and go to them as well. So it is a bit easier in solving duplicates
