Dan Cornett GEDCOM uploads are not possible on Geni, so there must be something else you are seeing.
Please keep in mind that Geni is built around the concept of one SHARED World Family Tree ... it is not 'my' tree nor 'your' tree nor 'that other person's' tree ... it is OUR tree.
What you may be seeing is people merging duplicate profiles, making the two of you co-managers of the profile of the same person.
If you truly wish to solely manage your own private copy of your ancestors, Geni is probably not the service you'd want to use. However, if you want to take advantage of the contributions others have made without having to duplicate that work again, then *that* is what Geni's collaborative, shared environment is all about.
FYI: profiles of living persons are not "visible" outside your Geni-defined Family Group; check your account settings for the scope of what Geni defines as a "Family Group".
