Some of the information I see on GENI about my family is incorrect or incomplete. I have lots of information regarding my family trees and would prefer to start my own file of relationships. I just need to know how to get started.

Jeff, Geni Curator Leo, I'll link below to some videos that might help get you started. Essentially, you just use the yellow arrows and start building. However, Geni is a collaborative world tree. Our goal is one profile for one person, so I would discourage starting a new tree on Geni that is a duplication of an existing tree, but encourage you to correct what is incorrect and complete what is incomplete in your existing tree. Curators can help you get through areas where there are improper relationships that need fixing. Even when we have separate trees created, we work to merge them into a single tree and combine duplicates. As for managers, when you create a profile you become a manager, but you need not be a manager to contribute to it or fix it. If the profiles are public, extend a collaboration request to any of the managers. If the profiles are private, they likely fall within your family group and you probably already have permission to edit and expand on them - if not, you can ask the manager to join your family group to gain that level of permission. On historical profiles, you can send messages to the managers or start a discussion on a profile. I do this sometimes if I think something is incorrect - reach out to the other managers and suggest changes, ask for sources, etc.
Here is a video on building within Geni: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4VkZHcNu1o
If you're determined to start your own tree, then I'd actually recommend MyHeritage.com. MyHeritage is the parent company of Geni, but unlike Geni which is build to be a collaborative world tree, MyHeritage is build for isolated trees. So if that is your goal, then you might have a better experience with that software.
Feel free to send me a private message if you need help fixing a certain part of your tree or don't understand how to accomplish something. I'd be happy to help. Jeff Gentes
