  Geni operates on a freemium model.  So many of the basic features of the site are free, adding profiles, inviting family, uploading media (up to a 1GB limit), sending messages, merging duplicates, projects, etc.  Geni hopes that some of those family members might upgrade to plus or pro membership to gain additional features from the site.  Here is a brief comparison: https://www.geni.com/pro/compare
