How could I get a relationship path go through blood relatives and not through in-laws?

The relationship path to a relative goes through a path of blood relatives while for a sibling (same parents) goes through a path of in-laws. why is this, and could it be corrected?

I'm trying to right a relationship path too. I have someone in attached profilehttp://www.geni.com/people/Tryntje-Mattheusse-Van-Deusen/6000000004059359508?through=6000000003075772687 as a cousin but then her child Robert Benson is not shown as a direct relative. Does anyone know how to resolve this?
