Security breach

When I registered with Geni, I gave my email address as geni@<my own domain>.me.uk

I am now receiving spam emails to that email address UNIQUELY issued to Geni solely for mail from Geni. Thus I must assume that my details have either been sold, stolen, or have leaked as a result of a security breach.

Can I please have an explanation?

  Same here - same spammer, different message.  Also a dedicated Geni-only address.

  Same here! I registred for "geni@<my domain in my country>" and have got countless of spam, mostly from "Grand-Palace". It seems that this site is leaking out it's member database to some bad persons. :-(

  Spammers have lists that guess millions of names for every domain hoping to get one to go through.  Getting such a message is no indication of a breach.  I get spam from email addresses that I've never used on any site.  Such is life in the digital world.

  While indeed spammers guess addresses - I get spam on support@, info@, and similar addresses on my second-level foo.com domains, (a) they don't seem to guess anything particularly obscure, and (b) they don't seem to attack my third-level bar.foo.com domains.  This particular case involves an obscure address on a third-level domain.  It seems almost inconceivable that they would guess it, or that I wouldn't get spam on dozens of more obvious addresses first.  In particular, I haven't gotten any spam to geni@ on any of my second-level domains, and here I am getting spam to geni@ one of my third-level domains.

  Trory, - your problem is probably closer related. Unless you have changed your preferences to hide your email for close family anyone within your family which is a Geni user, and as far as I can see you have 17, can see the email you have used on Geni, and if any of them have a virus or trojan on their PC there is a risk that your email, even if only used on Geni, will get spread to spammers.

  I am getting Linked-In spam to my geni only address, which is NOT guessable.
