Jeff, Geni Curator Frederick, I'm not sure when you're running into a pay way, but you shouldn't hit one just trying to build your tree on Geni. There are no limits to the amount of profiles you can add, but it will display if you try to do the advanced searching or use the Tree Matches (collaboration). That is the Geni Pro subscription, which you currently do not have. Here is a description of that service: http://help.geni.com/forums/382722-Premium-Subscriptions
The second area on Geni that hits a pay wall, which is separate from the Pro Membership, is the Record and Smart matches, which are a MyHeritage Data Service. http://help.geni.com/forums/21882243-Record-Matches-Smart-Matches- These provide matches to your profile by brining you Census Records, Marriage Records, Newspapers, Online Trees, etc specific to that profile (or the ability to use that subscription to research). Here is information on that service: http://help.geni.com/forums/21882243-Record-Matches-Smart-Matches-
If you create a separate tree on MyHeritage, they also have the same MyHeritage Data Service (can be used on both sites) which can be purchased, but they also have their Premium subscription (as you're limited to the number of profiles you can add on MyHeritage under a free account - 250). MyHeritage subscription plans can be seen here: http://www.myheritage.com/subscription-plans Again, the data service is separate from the pro/premium membership as there is a large cost in providing digital records.
So I'm trying to understand which pay wall you're describing. If you're trying to do Research, then the MyHeritage Data Plan is the way to go, which provides the Record and Smart Matches on Geni. Here is a link to where you can purchase the Data Subscription: http://www.myheritage.com/help/2012/07/how-can-i-purchase-a-data-subscription/
Let me know if you have additional questions.
