No way to use a GEDCOM. No way I'm going to retype those thousands of names! No way to correct wrong data [ Your records show my father to be "Raymond P BYARS", Looking just a bit closer you might notice that his Middle Name was Burnamen (After his mother's family) and, you might note, there are approximately NO "P's" in Burnamen, and NO he did NOT die in WWII, not unless he was capable of time travel so he could sire me and my four younger siblings. Taking a casual look at your data for my family I'm not sure if it's even 50% accurate. And you expect me to pay you $12+ a month for the privilege of correct your database? Now, THAT's chutzpah! Would you like me to mow your lawn too? I guess the public service you advertise means the the public provides you with service…?

PS: ALL my work is carefully documented. Undocumented material is kept in a separate database, most of it from other Genealogists and cannot be documented. <sigh>

  Steven, the trees on Geni are created by family members building their tree, so if you have a problem with the data, then you should contact the manager of that profile.  I only see one "Raymond P Byars" on Geni, who is listed as being born c1919 in Texas - it is managed by his third cousin.  I don't see anything about WWII and I don't see a family name of Burnamen on that line.  Is it possible you're just looking at a different person?  If you're looking at a different profile, perhaps you could post a link.  If this is your family, you can be added into the existing tree, which would allow you to edit and correct the information yourself.  This comes to the aspect of why Geni currently doesn't allow GEDCOM, which is a deliberate choice.  Geni is a world family tree, where we collaborate together on common ancestors.  See http://www.geni.com/worldfamilytree/learn-more  The idea is one profile for one person, no duplication.  So uploading a GEDCOM usually just mass duplicates existing profiles and data on Geni, which all have to be merged.  It was creating way more work then it was actually solving, since many users could just add several generations and connect into their existing ancestry.  There are tools that can help automate the process of migrating data from other online trees, but it's done with the idea of not creating duplication.  In the future, we hope to have a Smart GEDCOM upload, that will be able to determine when parts of the GEDCOM overlap existing content.

  As for your privacy, you are in control of what is displayed as public and if your profile is indexed by search engines.  Like most social network sites, your name defaults to public - if you want to change it, edit your privacy.

  I would like to contact the profile manager, but I won't pay $13 to do so. My father, Raymond Burnamen BYARS b. 22Oct1918, at Home, Swift, Nacogdoches, Texas; Son of Walter Pardue BYARSA and Minnie Catherine BURNAMEN. if she is who I think she is, she is his third cousin, and I am his eldest son! Perhaps she couldn't enter that information (at last), d. 1640 10Nov1967, 43813 Central NW, Albuquerque, Bernalillo, New Mexico. No, I'm NOT looking at a different person.

  So? Why are you wasting your time talking to an angry person instead of creating/writing code for the GEDCOM project!!!  ;-)

   

  Which I do not know how to do, so I just eliminated my account. That's probably private.

   

  Thanks for trying to resolve these issues. I just hate to see my family misrepresented (Daniel Webster BYARS was my father and his brother Daniel Webster BYARS II's Grandfather. Uncle Dan was D.W. the second, NOT D.W. himself !) by someone with little documentation.

  It shouldn't cost anything to contact the profile manager.  It looks like they got the "P" from the 1930 U.S. Census which indexed "Raymond P Byars", but upon inspection of the document, it is probably a sloppy B.
