I asked a "tree manager" to contact me to share info about common ancestors.
Do I get an auto notification by email when he is trying to contact me or should I have left my email address with him?
Or do I have to keep checking his string?

If you have messaged him through a profile on Geni, and he then contacts you, and if your settings are such that you are set to receive notification of messages on Geni, then, yes, if he answers your message, you will get email notification. Now, if he hasn't been active for a while, or if he doesn't answer messages, you might not be hearing from him. You can always post a discussion from the discussion tab on any profile you'd like more information about, to see if other Geni users have information.
