I'm from very old Virginia lines, which means even back to Europe I have descent and kinship back to the same people, only in different ways.
For example, very often when I search Geni, the database gives me descent from one paternal side of the family -- which is rather distant -- and yet I know if it searches under the other paternal side I am a direct descendant of that very same person.
What is the answer for those of us who have many lines from the same families, via different branches and sides of the family. It's so frustrating.
As an example (one among more than a few), my descent from Thomas Wyatt, the Tudor poet, is direct through my paternal grandfather. But sometimes Geni goes through my paternal grandmother's side, where I am something like fourth cousin to Thomas Wyatt.
How do I search via specific lines of descent? It all seems random.
