I would like to see something done about place names. For coutries where English name is different from original, names are all over the place.
For example Croatia and Hrvatska (and all the other possible names for it) - are the same thing, but when I look in statistics they are treated as different countries
I still have not figured out logic behind it as it looks that I get prompted with both versions (Croatian name for the place and English version for it)

Iddo Micha Oberski I agree the place names are a mess. I have now discovered that when I enter 'Amsterdam, Netherlands' from the drop down list, it comes up as 'Government of Amsterdam, North Holland, The Netherlands '. Why 'government of is added is a mystery to me. Of course you can simply enter the details exactly as you want them by using the 'edit location details' function, but then you have to enter it over and over again and it becomes tedious. It would be handy if each user could have their own list of location details, that then become available through a drop-down menu? But then we also need a tool that allows you to match up different versions of the same location, as Jadranka indicated. A bit like doing a merge of profiles, except just for location details?

Job Waterreus Please also use the same tables when adding a profile and when editing a profile.(different tables are used now).
It would also be nice if there was help info on correcting mistakes/duplicates in these tables.

Wendy Ann Rockwell When I enter a place name and enter save, it seems to get stuck, not returning to the profile. After a while if I press cancel sometimes the place information is on the profile and sometimes not.

Teddy Nadeau Place names would be better if they optionally referenced a place-dictionary e.g. (English names circa year). When I enter a person from 1600 Scotland, it often suggests a modern-day 6 character zip code which seems quite wrong. It is nice to know the notation 'additionally' in current terms but the original source data is from 'old-terms' and should be also able to be entered that-way (generally should be no/little mandatory impedance in data entry vs. source document. Nice to know that a place back then was 'New Holland' or 'New France' and that in today's terms it would be Manhattan, NYC or Quebec City.

Bruce Leary LIke many USA driven web sites, place names are given American precedence. Couple that with the fact that all place names are GOOGLE interpreted, so unless you live in the US of A or use present day post codes in other countries, the records will not accept the proper place name for deaths or births etc. So for example I cannot enter Poplar, Middlesex for the death of my relatives even though the Free BMD (officlal UK records of Birth Death and Marriage on-line ) has Poplar as a registration district for B, M & D. What a farce. How you expect accurate recording or allowing others to accurately research their familes I do not understand. All we need is an override that allows accurate input.

Jeff, Geni Curator Bruce, every place field has a option below the single field to edit the details where you can directly fill out each location field. The main, Google supplied, auto-fill field is a convenience option for the majority of cases to assist in data entry. If you don't like the result, you can manually edit it.

Claus Møller Would it be possible to, as you have selected a language-"folder", when you are creating a profile, to limit the Google-picks for place-names? Aka I open a profile, and select Danish as language for the name, only places in Denmark comes up? And even more sophistocated: If i enter a year, only the place-names, that existed for that place, county, parish etc came up? We have many places in Denmark, where the parish has been merged at some time, countys has been devided... OR some kind of database, that a member could enter, to see information of a specific place, at a specifik time, somewhat like Google Earth, but added the timeline, and then a info-box that comes up, as you "float" over somewhere.
