Rather than basing the fee on the number of nodes, the system should revoke back to unlimited nodes for free, and charge for the following features:
- Merging
- Modifying a profile entered by someone else
- Looking for the path between me and someone else
Rather than basing the fee on the number of nodes, the system should revoke back to unlimited nodes for free, and charge for the following features:
Merging & edintg should be a part of the free as it helps connects the trees - padi farures should be the printing out, the fancy charts, wall charts,
Merging, offering suggestions to edit profiles and finding out connections should be free as part of the building the world tree.
Why can't Geni be financed by advertising?
I don't object to Geni wanting to charge for premium services, and I don't believe that advertizing can cover everything. So the question is - what should be considered premium services? I don't believe that having access to my own data, or adding my own data, should be considered a premium service.
Sites like Facebook survive very well from advertising. If Geni is freesurely it will attract many more contributors with significantly more contributions which is surely the goal of Geni!
as i commented "November 1: Changes to Membership Tiers & Merging":
the basic account should allow us to add as many relatives as we want, edit information about those people, add pictures etc.
but i guess a real basic user doesn't need for example a statistic function, merging and other "advanced" tools.
the premium account should be like it was + some new features would be ok, so that it is worth paying for it.
It would also be ok to allow people to use the pro account for example for just one month, so you pay let's say 3 or 4 €, your pro is activated for one month, and after that month you are a basic user again, without having a subscription.
i guess this is how you could make much more money because i think there are many people who would like to have a pro account 2 or 3 times a year without a subcription,
but if you leave it as it is now, you will lose all those basic users who would pay like i said AND many users who already have a subsription will quit, too, because everyone knows, that pro users can't be without the help of basic users.
what would also be great is if you offered for example one week of pro to people who are contributing to geni, for example translators which contributed much recently.
my opinion is, if a site "rewards" it's users, the users will reward the site, too, by maybe paying for one month or longer.
Raphael - in possible answer to your question why Geni can't be supported by advertising like Facebook, see http://www.geni.com/discussions/103448
I'd rather see a one-time flat fee ($100--maybe $200 or $250.) I would pay that. I abhor monthly subscription to anything. Geni is very cool -- a lifetime sub. for $XX would be a winner, IMHO...STeve Zweig
Steve Zweig they do have a lifetime membership or did have - it was closer to or over the $300 figure - at one time they were offing a discount during the early fall of 2011 not sure what it is now as if logged in there is no place can go to see the fee structure - its not even accessible under accounts unless you have it enter all your credit card information etc. before you can choose your options
I checked. It is $417 for lifetime Pro membership. Hmmmmm...
hmmmmmmm they have reaised the fees again it was around 4250 before the big crash of august 2011 then went up close to $300 and then they backed down for a littlw while and offered a discount at a 5 between the 250-299 range not sure of exact figures........ sort of reminds me of the gasoline prices........
I am not seeing any new fee increases since the major one in, I believe, November. That was when Lifetime went up to $417, and that is still where it is. (They did have at least one or two sales since, but a sale ending when they said it would is not my idea of a fee increase).
Steve - Geni states how much per month - but that is just to make folks feel it is inexpensive or some such nonsense. The whole amount has to be paid at once, up front -- it is not billed monthly.
Judi / Judith - re: "there is no place can go to see the fee structure" - Not so, there are many ways to get there. On my account where I have over the 100 profiles, I can just click on "Upgrade" in the upper right of the screen. On either that account or this, since I have not used my Free Two Week Trial, I can just click on "Learn More" at the end of the paragraph after Try Geni Pro for Free. Both bring up a screen with all three options - Pro, Plus, Basic - click "Choose Plan" - then at top, there is drop-down menu for 1-year, 2-year, and Life - and it tells you under that box what that Price is for the option chosen (choose each in turn, to see all three prices for that Plan). No need to enter any Credit Card info to see it. Ditto if I choose "Try Geni Pro for Free" from drop-down menu that also shows Edit Profile, Account Settings, Logout, etc. Also ditto if choose "Account Settings" and then click on "Upgrade". -- Yes, that screen that gives the prices asks for Credit Card info -- but no need to enter any Credit Card info to see what the Prices will be!!
i was gifted pro and all the want is for me to enter a credit card @ there is no pricing available i have checked under all options listed not pricing shows for the pro is available until or after your credit card is either entered or charged - also there is no option to upgrade to lifetime thus the amount for it is not visible I have been through all the categories listed under accounts on my screen to find current pricing s for either pro or liftime an dits just is not available under my version of 'sccount setting' under anny of the catgories listed - - with my computer i am set to auto login i guess i could log out and then go do google search for geni and find a pricing list - - but it would be nice to them them available and listed all the time in the accounts area - not hidden when you do become a pro
