When we choose to select a document from existing documents, like when adding documents to a timeline entry, provide a basic search tool so we can easily find the document we want to cite. The current "scroll down through every document you've ever added until you find the one you want" deal is a hassle if you have a lot of documents, and usually results in me a) re-uploading the same document or b) giving up entirely.

This is a very valid request. It's over four years since it was made, and not so much as a response or reason why that would be difficult.
One of the big attractions for us who pay to use geni is that it is a whole-world tree, so ideally each person will exist only once, unlike sites like MyHeritage and Ancestry, where inaccurate information is copied from tree to tree, and it is very hard to remove. We like to get the facts right, and that means supporting them with documents that we upload. Then as new discoveries are made and documented, other managers can correct our mistakes.
Another big attraction of geni is that it is very easy to see documents and add citations of the facts supported by those documents.
But the lack of a search facility wastes a lot of our time, or discourages us from uploading documents or leads to duplication, as @Ashley Odel said.
I'm a programmer, and I know it would not be difficult to implement a search facility. The documents must be kept in a database, and a search for text within the titles, perhaps filtered by date and location, would not be hard to program. You could even pay google for the right to use their search algorithm to search the content as well.
Your lack of response shows a disrespect of the work that we do in providing the information that geni makes money from. And we even pay to put our information into your hands.
