3 annoying issues

1. Automatic and unpredictable language conversion of places. If I put Zhytomir when adding a new profile - it is converted to Russian. If I put it later - it is not converted... Instead having all my Polish profiles in Poland, half are in Polska...

2. When sending a message, the feature of "Descendants of" doesn't give ALL the descendants with email, NOT to the lower possible generation. If you want them all, you need to use it again and again on children of the root, and on their children.

3. On the new documents list - PLEASE add sort option where you see the latest uploaded first !

  Yes to better document sorting!  I have something like 400 documents now. Search would be great, too.

  Hi Ofer - it would be really helpful to us if you could create separate bugs for separate issues so that they can be tracked and dealt with separately.

  For the place names issue, we're relying on Google maps for those. We've recently fine-tuned the way we're handling the information that Google returns to us, so that should be a lot better now.

  For the descendants of feature for sending messages, I just tested and was able to get all descendants for the profiles I chose. If it's still not working the way you'd expect, can you please send me a link to a profile you're trying to get all the descendants of?

  We have added an option to sort documents by upload date, document date, or document title. You can also organize your documents into collections to make grouping them easier. And we've got lots more enhancements for documents on the way.

  Hooray for documents enhancements! I have almost 1600 documents now. Categories and sorting are useless to me.

  For the "Descendants of"  take http://www.geni.com/people/Peisakh-Minkovsky/6000000011713050141

  You get "There are no claimed descendants of Peisakh to send an email. Once you have invited those people and they accept, you can send them messages."

  while there are plenty of descendants with email !   Natalie - you are testing with profiles that has no deep tree under them !  the algorithm should recursively search all tree below Peisakh until the lowest levels (leaves), while it is searching only 2-3 levels, this is why it doesn't find  e.g.

  http://www.geni.com/people/David-MINK/6000000008715345808 who is a descendant of Peisakh (here is the path - http://www.geni.com/path/David+MINK+is+related+to+Peisakh+Minkovsky?from=6000000008715345808&to=6000000011713050141)  and 50-60 more people !

  Hello Ofer - I'll check into the problem you're running into for the 'Descendents of' messages, but I suspect we cut that off after a certain number of generations for performance reasons. Realistically, we have to set a limit on the 'Descendants of' messaging feature, because as you go further back in the tree, the number of descendants can get rather large - it could be thousands or even millions of users. Trying identify so many profiles and then to send out so many messages at once would crash our servers and shut down the site.

  You can still get a list of the users on our site who are descended from that profile, though. If you head to our list page (http://www.geni.com/list/index), you are able to set the profile you referred to as the focus, set the Group to Descendants, then under filters, set the claimed status to Claimed. That will show you the list of users who are descended from Peisakh Minkovsky - there are 42 total.

  Tanks Natalie - I can understand the performance reason.  2 points though:

  1. Would be nice to provide a precise information - e.g. "Descendants-of (3 generations)" to avoid such frustration (another example is the default Family group stated as up to 4th cousin -  it is not exactly so... 4th cousins or even 3rd cousins x removed for for some x not included)

  2. For the Descendants-of - in many cases searching down all generations will not create a real big number of users (as in my case - just 42). So the programmer can define the recursion stopping rule dynamically according to number of users found so far, rather than statically as e.g. 3 generations down.

  Hi Ofer - Just to clarify on the family group - that is your 3rd great grandparents and their descendants. We often say "out to 4th cousins" as a short-hand, but as you've discovered, your 4th cousin once removed may not be included in that group.

  Also, keep in mind, that while the actual search result for finding users who are descendants of a certain profile might return a small number, there are still dozens, thousands, or millions of profiles we have to search to find them. We have to actually trace down each every single line of descent looking for a user. We're not capping that 'Descendants of' messaging feature by users found, but by the number of profiles checked. The further back you go in the tree, the more profiles we'll have to check before finding a user, and the more likely the cap will be reached before identifying all of them. That also makes it challenging for us to explicitly state who will be found on such a search, as that would vary by which profile you're using as the focus.

  Please help.  We have a man, Brian Healy, who claims to be related to our family and is in no way related to us.  He connects himself to my neice who is 58 years old and has been a mentaly and phyiscally deminished all of her life. He posts regularly as a an aka for her.  I am concerned about identity theif.  Chris von Rathmann

  I joined Geni 4-17-10. When I changed to another Internet Service Provider around 2013, I was not able to log back into my account.  I started another account hoping to some way get back to my original account where I had entered many, many family names.  It was a lot of work and took much time to enter it all.  I did contact someone at the time and the person said I had merely entered my password wrong.  It does not matter how many times I try to go back and get into my original account; I still cannot get in.  I gave up on it and started a new account but do not have the time to re-enter all the names.  Is there some way I can have my original account back.  I feel like it was hijacked.
