Actually, they tried this once before, a few months ago, and got so many complaints, they rescinded it. I was very surprised to see they just went back to charging for it again.
I am trying to guess - did Geni think 1) there are not enough folks left who will object so that it is "safe" now to do it? OR 2) that for so many of the folks using Geni, this is majorly important, and Geni needs money, therefore let's require folks to have a paid Membership to send Birthday Greeting (believing this will bring in gobs of money to Geni that they couldn't otherwise get??)
