The error is on the geni side — the place is being exported as an address, e.g.:
When I import the gedcom file, the place is sometimes in place and sometimes in memo fiels
the gedcom file looks like this:
1 BIRT
2 DATE 2 OCT 1823
2 ADDR
3 CITY Kotor
3 CTRY Crna Gora
This is incorrect according to the GEDCOM standard, it should be exported as a place for the event:
1 BIRT
2 DATE 2 OCT 1823
2 PLAC Kotor, Crna Gora
