I'm not sure how long it has been possible to enter a country code for phone numbers. I just (re-?)discovered it and tried it out. Results are quite bad. A phone number entered with country code 47 for Norway and then an 8 digit phone number (no area prefixes used here) ends up being displayed like this on the profile page:
"47--12345678"
whereas the callto: link is for "+1 47--12345678"
Error #1: The US country code is used in the callto link still!
Error #2: You could leave out the dashes when there are no area code. A single space character should be used between country code and the rest of the phone number.
Error #3: Country codes should, when included, be prefixed with a + to indicate that it is in fact a country code / phone number in international format (like you do on the callto link although you use the wrong country code there).
Suggest you check out ITU-T Recommendation E.123: http://www.itu.int/rec/dologin_pub.asp?lang=e&id=T-REC-E.123-200102-I!!PDF-E&type=items
