I no longer have the option to set some individual on my tree to a Private or Public Status.

Jeff, Geni Curator There could be several reasons for that. You can't make a living person public. I've also seen where management could pay a part depending on the settings of the manager.

Allan Manley Why doesn't geni give me the option of setting private or public? I cannot view members of my own family because you guys have LOCKED the private function.....
Since the take over by My Heritage Geni has gone backwards. PLEASE GIVE US PRO MEMBERS THE FREEDOM TO MAKE OUR OWN CHOICES!!!!!!!

Allan Manley I want to make a living person public... WHY CAN'T I??????????
-
Jeff, Geni Curator Allan, Geni had to comply with the stricter privacy requirements of My Heritage, which may be due to laws in Israel. Restrictions on making the information of someone else public. Strategically as MH and Geni start to work together, a common privacy model makes sense (for example if you wanted to transfer your tree to Geni from MH). However, we do have one option, if the profile is of a famous person/celebrity, then curators can make the profile public. If that's the case, send me a message and I'll work with you to make it a master profile.

Allan Manley Jeff - The person concerned is a family member of mine and is not famous. These Israeli privacy restrictions are NOT allowing me to see into the profiles of my own family.... Because of this "limitation" I cannot comply with merge requests from the manager of that hidden profile. If you guys want to privatise living people then MAKE THEM VIEWABLE TO THEIR FAMILIES - close and extended.

Jeff, Geni Curator You should be able to see private profiles in your family group (4th cousins... http://www.geni.com/account_settings/family). If these profiles are in another tree, then you probably want to send the manager a family group request. If they're already connected to the world tree and are on the edge of the private / public boundary, then I might be able to help if you want to send me a link to a public profile in the area.

Sebastian R Anderson Well if it is a law in Israel then apply it to people born living in Israel and not to the rest off us, I just selected people on my tree as deceased (most are pretty much alive last I checked) in order to see with a side note why due Geni's new setting. I am really thinking about moving over to Ancestry.
-
Jeff, Geni Curator Ancestry has the same restrictions, even more so... they won't even show the name, just "Living xxxx". As for international law, it doesn't work like that. You are bound by the law of the company's country and those housing the physical servers. As such, they are not bound by laws from Egypt for example but are bound by U.S. (and presumably Israel) law. I suggest against making living people public, particularly in marking them deceased. I can't tell you how many people have been extremely irate of family members and Geni for presuming to release their "private" family information. We have far far more people that are extremely privacy cautious than the other way around.

Tiiu Uusberg I chose privacy settings for my own profile and made all the settings public. Twice. It is still private.

Jeff, Geni Curator Are you saying it's not saving your preferences or that they don't appear to be working? Having your profile index by Web Search engines is another setting in http://www.geni.com/account_settings/permissions "http://www.geni.com/account_settings/permissions "Let the public search for me (profile privacy settings apply)"

Lois Canaday In researching my husband, I found his info re family, parents, siblongs and so on ok; however, someone added material from another person but with a different middle name, initial mn ...who died in 1989 at 69, completely different part of the country. I was absolutely unable to notify anyone of this terrible entry. My husband died Jan.14,2019. Is this an identity theft? It means I am unable to do any further research on this unreliable platform that makes it impossible to correct erroneous info attached by a stranger. ...also stopped because the material of this stranger means there is no security. Geni.com if you are reading this and you are for real please help correct this real invasion of privacy. I donot wish tobe considered a member.

Lois Canaday Also, my family does not wish to be part of a world tree.

Gregory Allen King I cannot add newfound verified information on my 5th great-grandfather because some a**hole has locked it without my permission. How can I even work on my tree with locks on my family members that I (as the originator of this tree) did not activate? I would appreciate information on how to unlock this entry so I won't have to create a duplicate and re-add all descendants and ancestors.

Geni Support Team Hi Gregory,
As volunteers who help maintain the integrity of the World Family Tree, Curators have the ability to lock fields in order to protect the data on a profile. If you would like to add information to a locked profile, then simply contact the curator of the profile and they will be happy to assist you, especially if you have new information and documentation. Creating a duplicate profile is not the solution. The goal of Geni is to create a single, shared family tree of the entire world through collaboration. If you want to maintain a tree under your full control, then Geni may not be the right site for you. You may be more comfortable using MyHeritage instead, which allows you to build a private, isolated family tree. You can read more about Geni's World Family Tree here: https://www.geni.com/worldfamilytree/learn-more
