Fixing Ex-partner/wife/husband   splits the families  etc when GEDOCOM is   made download and imported

Non of the  marriages if ex- are shown and  the spouse is not listed with children -

THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE

This is  creating a lot of work for people who  are  perfectionist -  those who are not are uploading to MyHertiage, Ancetry.com sharing with others and passing on incorrect data because of the "bug"

Other genealogy  programs - keeps all marriages list as divorced/ex- and keeps families together

Will this issue ever be solved?

I am going in and unmarking them as divorced and placing the info in the "place  area of the marriage  so families can be kept in tact =  but I have  people on GENI  changing them back to divorced - especially curators even tho I explain why I Iam  doing it this way - this is frustrating

  Judith, I've looked at the GEDCOM export from Geni and I've reviewed the GEDCOM 5.5 specification on dealing with ex-wife/husband and it looks fine to me.  I see the proper indicators for MARR (Marriage) and DIV (Divorce).  I've also imported a Geni GEDCOM into desktop software and it does, for example, show my parents as divorced.  One area that might be an issue, as I don't see it defined in the GEDCOM specification, is an ex-partner.  Since there is no MARR for a partner, there is no DIV to indicate separation - it's just two parents defined for a child, which most software will present as a marriage.  I see no method in the GEDCOM specification to indicate a ex-partner relationship.  So, perhaps it's just the software you're using and how it is deciding to present the data.  I don't see anything wrong with the Geni GEDCOM.

  So, like the other Curators, I would not change the marriage status on Geni.  It's a shared tree and you should keep it accurate regardless of your individual export problems.  Changing accurate data could be seen as a violation of the Terms of Use Section VI (1).  Try using MyHeritage Family Tree Builder, which is free, and you can print reports that should present it accurately.

  The print out was from an import into PAF no longer supporterd -  I also done a  separate ne file for this  in RootsMagic7 which is up-t-date and purchased  just last years and this same thin is happening   when  a GENI GEDCOM is imported into it

  I have  attached 2 screen prints since I have not   learned the ins and outs of generating a book format print out -   1st one shows the drop down  screen listing all his marriages  which are BLANK!!!!!!

  The second is  the   first marriage   which had children and   the mother has been disconnected because on GENI I show they are divorced -  this is what I am getting in all GEDOCM  on  any branch I download -   and I have tried several

  I am  going back in and  check  that they are married so  that when I produce GEDCOMS I have full families and  full marriages with divorces listed

  THIS IS   ACTUALL HAPPENING   and I am not making it  do it   or changing any data marks after its been imported in - I made this  special down load   to see if it was still occurring.

  I guess I could try  loaning it up into MyHeritage and see what happens or Ancestry.com   through  my genealogy class to see what happens  and then delete them  off  as I do not want to pass  miss-information around  I may have to check

  I do  GEDCOM's  of  my manuscripts from GENI to  work on off line and   for trying to clean up my files off here and back-up -  I am doing this for the Reichard manuscript   and this  "BUG" is going to be a very big headache in it

  I'd suggest downloading Family Tree Builder. No need to sync it with MyHeritage so you can test it for free.  While GEDCOM is a standard, sites can interpret the data differently and RootsMagic does have it's quirks when it comes to marriage / divorce events.  See http://www.tamurajones.net/RootsMagicPAFImport.xhtml

  "A quick test confirmed this to be the case. The RootsMagic GEDCOM import does import divorce events, but RootsMagic PAF import does not. If you import your PAF directly, divorce information is lost - and it is not all that is lost either."

  I am using the ORIGINAL download and  unzipped  from GENI - not   GEDCOMS of it from another program -  I have input the original  GEDCOM  not a remake of it into  PAF5.5, RootsMagic and now ancestry.com's FamilyTree14  with same results -  I am syncing it up on to  ancestry throught the genealogy class  - so someone can  see what's happening and happened  since I am getting the feeling everyone thinks I am NUTS   and do not know what I am talking about and seeing and getting   as soon as done will post the link so  you and someone else in GENI  can see the results

  I will   download the MyHertiage program but  I dislike it as It had major problems with  merging people that you had to  delete profiles instead of merging them together - unless that's recently changed and  you risked deleting  the correct profile you wanted to keep   To see what happens there  I am having trouble with it uploading to  MyHertiag but of course it is a good size file since "Blood"

  Ahhhhhhhhh!  MyHyHeritage shows exactly what I am talking about or trying to point out !!!!  

  This is the ORIGINAL GEDCOM from GENI   not a re-make from the  programs I entered  into with different varying results - PAF, RootsMagic7  BUT because  the marriage are marked as  divorced  GENI disconnects that spouse  from  the partner and his/her family

  PAF & RootsMagic7 transfers all 7 marriages with not data and I had some in all as to names -  notes,  and places marriage took place etc.   - MyHertiage  contains only 4 of the 7 -  1 partner not married  by whom he had a child  2 wives not shown and not listed  in file  but the families; and his last marriage 

  To me this is UNACCEPTABLE  the names and dates of all the spouse should be listed within a GEDCOM download even if  they are divorced -  this breaks up the families and passes on erroneous information to whomever down loads a GEDCOM from GENI

  I done the "BLOOD EXPORT" as Mike Stangle  told me to do   several years ago when I was trying the Descendants - which leaves out the spouses also -  and if remember right  the Ancestors export from GENI does the same -  I just no longer bother with those - only BLOOD EXPORTS  which gives all the spouses  unless they are mared  as "ex-partner" or "ex-wife"

  Oh by way Jeff I do not like  the" MyHeritage Family Tree Builder program"   I have not tried to see if they improved the merging process  but what it did  just today turns me off - It accessed and synced all my  trees that are in PAF & Rootsmagic;  not sure about back-up GEDCOM and It  tired  access all my photos I have placed under genealogy_photos  I canceled that and delted all other trees except for this one

  Thus  if the "bug can not be fixed  (or there are those  not willing to agree it does exist)  if  users are insistent on   marking as  "Ex" - I would suggest after filling  the divorced couples  profiles that the re-cap   that's given at the top be placed into  the about me section of each of the profiles the wife's in the husband and the husband in the wife's  and the full recap   the example  would be:

  Placing this under Raymond's  "About me"-  and after his name  the fact Divorced

  Thus at least the names of the spouse and any children etc. will be preserved  in each "about me" and a list of children

  
  And doing this for each divorce of the person(s) involved - since  the OMMISSION of spouses in occurring  when a GEDCOM  download is  requested  his way it will be easier for  families to be rebuilt.

  This problem  still exists  GENI does not bring  down the  divorced partner  even when they have children.  I have had to make a gedcom as a friend can not get into GENI even tho she accepted her profile  so just in case I am starting to work on   merging my  computer file with my online work -   attached is the sample report that  proves this problem still exists and is s still occurring

   marking a person  divorce should not severe the  data information of them as a couple and parents of their  children in  a gedcom

  I know no one wants to believe this is happening  and keeps telling me it does not or is not happening -  but  now I have to go back through  this gedcom of 4874  names  geni made and try and   check to make sure all couples are  attached to their spouse - go into geni find their data and re-enter them into 

  No other genealogical program Legacy, RootsMagic  counts the person as non-existent  just because the couple divorced  if married or split and went their  separate ways if marked as an ex-partner.

  It's 2020 and this is still happening.  Fortunately, I don't have many divorces in the tree so I'm just going to make updates in the destination system (MyHeritage) by hand.

  But, really, folks.
