Currently, whenever a new user responds to an email request to claim their profile on the Geni website, the setting within https://www.geni.com/account_settings/profile_privacy titled "Let my family edit my profile" is turned off by default.
When I was a new user to Geni, I sent *many* requests to family members to "join our tree" on the website so they could view the family tree. However, as they have joined over the years (only intending to create a profile to view the work I made on the family tree, not intending to help contribute to it themselves) it has locked me out of being able to edit those profiles, meaning I've had to very tediously reach out to each one of them and guide them through how to turn the setting off so I can keep working on the family tree. (This is an especially involved process for those family members who are older and not very tech savvy.)
These days I have learned better and I NEVER send email invites to family members to sign up for an account. However, it would be nice if the "Let my family edit my profile" setting by default could be set to ON for new accounts so that family genealogists would not be disincentivized for having their families sign up.
