Linking a tree I have been compiling with another existing tree

In my tree, one of my ancestors is Thomas Comber, married to Alice (nee Thornhill). I have no ancestry for Alice, but have found her ancestry on another tree which does not have ancestry for Thomas.

I would like to link the two trees to combine the ancestry of Thomas and Alice.

I have read up on this, but am not sure exactly how to go about it, and am a bit nervous to just barge in in case I totally mess things up.

Can I bring the other tree into mine, leaving the other one as is, or do the original two trees "disappear" when they are combined into a new tree. Would the combined tree become  my "default" tree?

I'd appreciate any help I can get - even if it is to point me to tutorials or other forum threads where I could get the help.

  Jewel, I found the connection by searching on my family name (Comber) using the Research...Surnames menu selection. The search returned a large number of profiles for Comber, and I just scrolled through them until saw one that corresponded to a name on my tree. I then looked for common profile details to confirm the match (e.g. birth/death dates, parent names, sibling names, etc).

  What I didn't realize at the time was that the profiles that came up in the search were for people already on the Geni World Tree.  By copying and pasting (I suppose it was dragging and dropping), my profile to the one I found, I added my tree to the World Tree. This was probably not the best thing to do, since I brought in a good number of individuals (from earlier generations on other branches of my tree) that were already existing on the Woirld Tree (previously added by others). This created a fair number of conflicts that had to be reconciled.

  In retrospect, I should have not done this as one big batch connection, but done it piecemeal, making sure that profiles I was adding were not already there. If a particular profile I had contained more informatioin than one already existing, I would be able to update the existing profile.
