Very confused @ how to connect to the World Family Tree + "Famous Profiles"

Hello,

I am a new user of this site and just started building my family tree. I know, through family history and through actual historical documents, that I am a direct descendant of an individual listed in the "famous profiles" (I can't recall exactly what they are called). I built my tree all they up to that person with birth and death dates + places of birth as I have all of this information; however, when I search for that person (who is now on my tree) it says we are not related when I search for his profile. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I also am super confused about how to get connected to the big family tree which was my original goal. I thought it would be fun to work on with my kids and to discuss topics like global humanity, etc. I feel very inept at the moment and have read through the articles already posted in the help section.   I read those resources you shared here, but I'm still concerned that this is only available to Pro users, or is there a free way to join the Big Tree?

  You can connect to to the Big Tree as a basic user, but it is a bit more complicated because you can only use the Geni search for profiles that you mange or those that are managed by a collaborator of you.

  But you can use an external search engine like Google to find public profiles on Geni (add site:geni.com/people when using Google to search only on Geni for a profile). If you can use multiple browsers you might be able to logon to Geni on one browser and stay logged off on the other browser. When logged off you can use the Geni search to find public profiles.

  One you have made a start and some profiles are merged with profiles managed by other users start to collaborate and you can also find the profiles of those users you collaborate with. So if you collaborate with enough others you will be able to use the Geni search for most relevant profiles.

  Keep in mind that collaboration works best if you add sources to profiles and follow the naming conventions for the part of the tree you are working in.

  I got suggestions to merge profiles via the blue matches. But when I try to merge those, I always got the pages for subscription and can't go forward without paying.

  Just use Google search to find the profiles. If the surname is rather unique you can also try to find the profiles using https://www.geni.com/surnames.

  If you cannot locate the profile for the merge, you may be able to locate the user and contact him / her to help you with the merge.

  Geni is making some changes to the merge so at the moment you will get some match indications for profiles that really do not match (not alive at the same time / living in different countries / having different parents) so it can be hard to find the profile that Geni indicates as a possible match. So if you cannot find the profile there is a got change the match is not valid, just try  other matches.
