When I try to find the closest path to an ancestor Geni totally ignores my fathers line (which is the line that would be the closest) and routes me through my mothers line!
If I ask for a path for an ancestor on my mothers line it works great!

I have the same problem. I have a direct blood line through my father's family, but Geni goes through my mother's family line. It is so much shorter through my paternal side than maternal. I have tried 3-2 or 3 times to get Geni to do a CORRECT search. Keeps coming up "no blood relatives" when I know there are.
After I started my Family Genealogy in 1974, my mother used to tell me she and my Dad were 2nd cousins. I began searching for both my paternal and maternal ancestors. I ALWAYS include their mother's maiden name if I know it whenever I'm searching names. I've been working on my Philippine Ancestral "Gaddang" Tribe Genealogy 46 years and counting. I searched for years through their individual consanguinity (blood lines), but couldn't find a common ancestor that linked them. After many years, I discovered the affinity (marriage relationship) of my father's grandmother, and my mother's grandmother was the common surname linking my parents in their 2nd cousin relationship. I hope a mother's maiden name helps. Its another surname name to search.

Geni will calculate the closest blood and in-law path to you/focus person, if either can be found.
Otherwise, you may be seeing the one which was cached or calculated first. Paths can be refreshed one week after the initial path is found. If changes have been made to the tree and you would like to recalculate the relationship path sooner, please contact a curator.
Also, please keep in mind that pending merges and recent merges can also prevent the closest relationship from calculating.
I love Geni, and use it all the time!
BUT: I have been experiencing the same exact issue of Geni ONLY showing ancestors through my mothers line and VERY-VERY SELDOM - my fathers!
I even paid to upgrade to Geni PRO, and absolutely nothing has changed!!??
Can someone please help??
Hi Charles, Geni will show you the closest blood and in-law path to you/focus person, if either can be found in the tree. This means that if the closest relationship path is through your mother, then we will show you that one.

I see there are some tree conflicts in your tree. Tree conflicts can sometimes prevent the shortest path from calculating. You may want to look into your Merge Center and resolve any outstanding tree conflicts.
