Unable to see a public profile

Hello,

 

I am new to Geni and have a basic account. I performed a quick search on a deceased family name and found that someone else might have more info on that person. It says the deceased family name is a "Public Profile" but when I click on it, it takes me to signup page for a membership. When I try to click on "View Profile" or on the person's name who manages it, it also takes me to the membership signup page. 

I assume a public profile means I should be able to see it on the basic membership. Is this not the case? 

What does a basic membership entail exactly?

  Public profiles can be viewed by anyone, and are included in our public search index.

  Hi Samantha,

  Yes, you can view public profiles on Geni for free. However, full access to our search engine is a paid feature. Basic members may only access profiles they manage or collaborate on in the search results for free. These profiles are indicated with a green check mark. However, you can do a Google search for the person's name + geni.com and if it is a public profile, you will be able to access it for free through those search results.

  To answer your question, a basic account allows you to add unlimited people to the tree, collaborate with other users, and take advantage of our DNA features in partnership with Family Tree DNA.   I am furious with Geni/MyHeritage. I have spent so much time inputting my family tree and beyond and now to be able to see public profiles that I do not manage, they send me to a signup page for membership, when I search within Geni, EVEN THOUGH THROUGH A GOOGLE SEARCH THESE PUBLIC PROFILES ARE FULLY ACCESSIBLE.. I used to be a Pro member, but since MyHeritage took over, it's all about money, even though the site content totally depends on its members.

  If you collaborate with other users you can also find the profiles they manage with the Geni search screen. So as a basic user try to collaborate with other users and curators who are working on the same part of the tree. If you do you can access most profiles with the Geni search screen.

  Alternative: use 2 sessions where on one session you do not login to Geni and use that session to search with the Geni search screen. Use the other session where you are logged in  to access the profiles. It may take Google  a bit more time to index just added profiles, so using Geni search you may be able to find some profiles that you cannot find on Google yet.

  Hi Iddo, we're sorry to hear about your frustrations. To clarify, full access to our search engine has been a Pro feature since 2011, which is before we joined MyHeritage.

  There are still a wide variety of features you can do for free, including viewing public profiles. In fact, this thread has offered a number of ways for you to view public profiles you don't manage for free. You may want to take some time to try them out to see if they meet your needs. If you would prefer the convenience of using our advanced search features, then perhaps you may want reconsider upgrading to Pro.
