I am maintaining the family tree on a different platform, due to privacy concerns of some in the family. I was hoping to sync data to Geni (filtered to what the family allows me share).
I thought that the way to do this is through GEDCOM.
I would apply the filters locally, do an export from the other platform and do an import here.
For some reason, some of the new ancestors I have identified don't seem to apperar in Geni even though they are in the GEDCOM file. Is it a bug? Or am I not understanding the GEDCOM import functionality?

Job Waterreus Geni will start importing 5 generations and import will stop for a branch when Geni finds a possible duplicate. That makes it possible to skip importing branches that are already on Geni. The import for such a branch will continue when the profiles are merged (and it will stop again on the next duplicate)
So importing a GEDCOM completely can take some time (depending on the size it can take from days to weeks or for a large GEDCOM even years)
For a starting basic user it is hard to find the duplicate profiles so merging is mostly done by other users on Geni when they see there is a duplicate. Some branches may have users that are not frequently online and that may slow the process)
You may want to look at SmartCopy (https://www.geni.com/projects/SmartCopy/18783) and also this project: https://www.geni.com/projects/Connecting-to-the-Big-Tree/17983
Please keep in mind that you can use a GEDCOM only once to get data from another platform to Geni, you CANNOT use it to sync between the platforms without a lot of effort. A GEDCOM will make a duplicate for any profile that is already on Geni.
