Hi Derek. It would help if you provided a specific example, but in general, relationship paths on Geni are based on paths that exist in the tree.
We will calculate the closest blood and in-law path to you/focus person, if either can be found. Otherwise, you may be seeing the one which was cached or calculated first. Paths can be refreshed one week after the initial path is found. If changes have been made to the tree and you would like to recalculate the relationship path sooner, please contact a curator.
Also, please keep in mind that pending merges and recent merges can also prevent the closest relationship from calculating.
