I found the following situation:
There is a couple; let's call the profiles "husband" and "wife". This couple has profiles for two children; let's call them "son" and 'daughter"; but these children do not really exist.

When I tried to remove "son" and "daughter" as children of "husband" and "wife"; I get message "Warning: Removing these connections will split the tree." and changes cannot be saved.

There are already profiles for the parents of "husband"; let's call them "father" and "mother".

Here's what should happen:
Remove relationship between "son" and his parents ("husband" and "wife").
Remove relationship between "daughter" and her parents ("husband" and "wife").
The profiles for "father" and "son" should be merged.
The profiles for "mother" and "daughter" should be merged.

What is the correct procedure to accomplish this?

  A basic user is not allowed to split the tree, so a profile has first to be connected to another part of the tree before the wrong connection can be removed.

  In most cases in tree view you can move a profile and drop it on the correct parent and specify it is a child of that profile and then repeat it for the other parent. You then have a child with a tree conflict. If you go to profile view for the child and edit the relation tab you can remove the incorrect parents.

  If that does not work you can ask help from a curator in ATTENTION Curators, please assist. If you need that help post a link to the profile(s) there.

  @Job Tree view does not allow me to "move" a profile.

  I think you are suggesting that first step is to make "son" a brother of "father" then initiate a merge between "son" and "father". This is not possible since parents of "father" are not yet in geni database.

  If you click on a profile in treeview (not on the name or the picture) the side panel opens and there is a move command there (unless you try to move a private profile which you do not manage). See How do I drag and drop profiles in the tree to merge duplicates?

  Hi Frank, the "Move Profile" option is found in the side panel. First click on a node to open the side panel, click "More," and select "Move Profile." 

  Job's suggestion will work if you add the parents for "father" and "mother."

  Alternatively, if you don't have parents added for "father" or "mother," then you can use the "Move Profile" tool to merge "father" and "son" and "mother" and "daughter." First, open the side panel for "son," click "More," and select "Move Profile." This will place his node in a tray at the right. Drag and drop that node on top of "father" in the tree and select "This person is the same."

  

  This will take you to the merge comparison page where you can complete the merge. Once the merge is completed, you will be taken back to the tree. Note this will cause a conflict, but don't be alarmed. Click on the edit icon on "father's" node and select the Relationship tab. Remove the incorrect parents ("husband" and "wife") and save. Then repeat the steps for "daughter."

  I merged "father" with "son"; then removed "husband" and "wife" as parents.

  I merged "mother" with "daughter"; then removed "husband" and "wife" as parents.

  All fixed! Thanks.
