Gudrun Woldstad born Kavli) was never my step mother even though she was married to my father, and my father never was interested to marry my mother!

  Technically she probably is since she married your father after you was born, but that is a big challenge on using such terms when displaying a relationship, because it is ever worse calling someone a step-mother if she was married to your father before and even died before you was born. To make it fully correct both spouse connection status, the dates from when it started (and eventually ended) and the birth date of the person compared to these dates. What if one of the dates are missing?

  Even then you would probably protest on calling your father's wife as a step-mother of they married after you moved from home ;-)

  When we had access to beta-testing of translating relationships we solved it elegantly in Norwegian by always calling the person which was not your mother as your fathers (ex-)wife/spouse

  The factor for you calling her a step-mother does probably depend on who raised you. If it was your father you would call her that, but that is a factor not available as a genealogical info in the tree, so I have suggested for Geni that they stop using step-xyz totally to avoid such problems.

  You can remove the "step" label from these profiles by clicking the "Edit" link to the right of the Immediate Family module header on the Overview tab, and hiding the unwanted steps from the immediate family group. For more information about the "step" label, please see the following link from our FAQ section:

  The FAQ explains how to "Edit" the "Immediate Family" which changes how parents other spouses are labeled: http://help.geni.com/entries/21364092-Why-are-people-referred-to-as-a-stepparent-or-step-sibling-in-my-family-tree-

  However, there seems to be a limitation that you can only "Edit" the "Immediate Family" of private profiles.
