OK, so, I find a person, I click on the name of the tree owner to send them a message to ask a question and all I get is a redirect to a screen to try and get me to purchase an upgrade. So, let me know, do I have to upgrade to a paid version in order to send a tree owner a message, because that is what it appears to be to me. Thanks

Jeff, Geni Curator I don't believe that is the case. I just logged into my dummy basic account and was able to send messages fine to other Geni users.
You may hit a pay wall if you're using the search feature to find the person, as that tends to bring up the upgrade screen.
