When in correspondence with another Geni-ologist using your message service, I have hit a problem with misinterpretation of ASCII Character 0062, the "greater than" symbol. Conventionally, < and > are used to delineate web page and e-mail addresses, so that subsequent punctuation is not erroneously incorporated into the quoted URL or mail address. Your coding appears to handle < correctly in this context, but the > symbol is erroneously being incorporated into URLs as if they end in >
Worth trying to fix - it's a decoding thing they should try to do when they create the email. It is common for websites to convert that character into its harmless html encoded equivalent as that character is used in the web page itself and could be read as code instead of text. Such characters are often stripped/converted/not allowed to prevent code injection / cross site scripting vulnerabilities in the website.
I think that the fix should be simple, because ASCII 0062 is not (AFAIK) permitted as a character in either URLs or e-mail addresses. The existing coding appears to identify the start of URLs and mail addresses OK, so the logic of isolating the > at the end and restoring the text to > should be pretty straightforward. As things are, though, it makes a complete mess of any clickable link. I look forward to hearing that the Curator has Cured!
