Search function only works part time

For some of my profile if I enter the name in the search window it will tell me no profiles exists even when I am looking at it, others will come up fine. The problem does not depend on the line, a father will so no profiles found but the son will come up right away as will the grandfather. This happens on profiles i created and ones that were inported. I did find that when I was downloading documents it has a “search further” function and for ones that are “no profiles found “ this function will find them. I user a load that is about six years old but with all the updates. This is very irritating since you can’t find the profile you are looking for. I have tried both search functions and the profiles are about 2 months old. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated!

  Okay I will give you the main one that is giving me trouble now. My mother’s family is the Wheeler if I di a search for Jedediah, Bond, or Joel Wheeler (working backwards on the tree) they all come up in the search with no problem. However if I go further back in the tree to Micajah or Benjamin, the next two in the tree they will never come up in the search. I was downloading some documents into other profiles and out of curiosity I tried it for Micajah it came up with nothing but that search function had a button for “ search further “ and when I pressed that, after a time, Micajah did come up. Unfortunately the normal search function doesn’t have the “search further “ option but maybe it will give you some clues. The same thing happens thoughout the tree with both profiles I entered and ones that have been imported to the tree. I have been trying to find a pattern but haven’t yet but I will keep trying. I would appreciate any help you can give me. @Roger Schaefer

  Thanks for the additional details. When we do a search for Micajah Wheeler, the profile appears at the top of the search results. In fact, the results show there are 11 profiles on Geni with that name.

  

  When you say he never comes up in search, do you mean in the quick search that appears as you’re typing in the name in the search box? For example:

  

  The profiles that appear in that quick list are profiles that are within your max family group (third great grandparents/fourth cousins and closer), profiles you follow, and profiles you recently viewed. If the profile you are looking for does not appear there, you can simply finish typing in the name and hit “enter” or “return” on your keyboard to search the database for the profile.

  You can also go to the Search page, to use our advanced filters to narrow your search results. To reach the page, click "Research" at the top of the page and select "Search."

  Thank you for your quick response. I am probably not expressing myself very clearly. I know about both search engines and have used them both in my varies attempts. What I need is to be able to search for one of my ancestors on my own site. As you say there are eleven (11) Micajah Wheeler that come up on a search but if you notice none are from my site. I have found these many times but I am not trying to research other Micajah ( or which ever person I am trying to find) I just use both search engine to find people on my own website. It is very difficult to fellow each line on the site tell I find the person I am looking for. When I enter the name of a person who I know is on the site it is supposed to bring up their profile so I cane click on it and enter the tree there, but for many people in my tree the system says it can not find a profile am I doing something wrong? Thanks for any help.

  I’m not sure I understand what you mean by “my site.” Do you mean a profile that is directly connected to you in the tree?

  The first Micajah Wheeler in the search results is the profile for your fifth great grandfather. Are you looking for someone specific within the tree you are viewing? You can switch your tree view to the Standard view. Then click on the “Go To” tab, which brings up a list of every person in that tree view. Clicking on their name will take you to that person’s position in the tree. To adjust the number of generations displayed in the tree, click on the gear icon at the left of the page.

  Also you state, “When I enter the name of a person who I know is on the site it is supposed to bring up their profile so I cane click on it and enter the tree there, but for many people in my tree the system says it can not find a profile”

  Where are you entering the name? Is it in the search box? If there is a profile you know exists, but you’re getting the message that it can’t be found, you’ll want to make sure you are typing in the exact spelling of that person’s name as it appears on the profile.
