Searches not working - existing paths disappeared - system has become unusable

Since the change in algorithm with the system running dual searches, instead of searching for up to two minutes and then displaying "no path found" the system hangs. Sometimes a path comes in as an email notification a few hours later. Other times is is still searching for the path three or four hours later.

Many previously established paths (of which I have kept screenshots) seem to have dissolved and are replace with "no blood relationship" or "no in-law relationship" or both.

Until last week, I could search for and find connections to several hundred people in a week. Now I'm lucky if I can get two in one day. What has gone wrong?

  Yes I experience this too! Easy pathways from son or daughter to father or mother don't exist: no blood line. Existing paths dissapear , extremely slow, you can't follow a path manually etc etc.....

  More users are having the same problem. It is a startup problem and should be gone after the first day. Not much that can be done about it. The servers can not handle the load this kind of searches cost a lot of computer time. And every one did try this new feature out on the first day.

  I have look what was going on. And it looks like automatic loading of two paths was turned on. It is now on request so if you are in the situation that the server or the webservice Geni.com is extremely slow do not hit that search button for the pathway. Or do one search of a pathway and wait for the result. 

  Thanks for reporting the problem and sorry for the extremely slow server for a couple of days. The geni staff was very hard working on way to solve the slowness. They constantly are working to keep the server up and running.

  Thanks for the information Jeroen (by the way, I see that we are related, you are my second cousin twice removed's husband's brother's ex-wife's nephew's wife's first cousin once removed).

  I guessed that simultaneous searches with separate searching for blood and in-law paths would require a lot more computing capacity.  There has been an improvement for individual new searches.

  However, I am still having major problems with loss of paths that I had establishes before, with the system breaking paths when I try to step from a profile it recognises as having a path to me to a parent, sibling, child or spouse of that person. More than half the time it then breaks the path and shows no connection and sometimes when I go back to the original profile that then shows no path. Even when I go back three or four profiles in a path to one that it still shows as related, when I then try to move back along the original, the path breaks.

  Yes exactly Bernard Miller!. The pathways break even if you know that there is a bloodline. The system shows no in-law path or no blood line path but it was clearly there before.

  I have worked out that it is not that the system is not finding connections, it simply stops working and gives a wrong message. I was stepping through the path from someone who was and still is shown as connected, Alonso Pimentel y Pacheco, II Duque de Benavente, trying to reach another person  María Ana Pimentel y Velasco. I had a path from Alonso of three people.  The first was his daughter Maria Pimentel de Mendoza. Geni showed:

  No blood relationship was found - No in-law relationship was found.

  I then tried eight of Alonso's children, first of all by checking their relationship to Alonso.  When I set the system to search from each child to Alonso it showed Alonso was their father. When I reset it to search from me, although I have an in-law relationship to Alonso (which has not yet disappered) it shows:

  No blood relationship was found - No in-law relationship was found.

  This is clearly wrong. What it means is that the system has stopped searching but instead of showing a message (it probably ought to be that the system is overloaded) it shows no relationship. That makes the system unusable.

  Sometimes it gives an impossible message showing:

  You are connected - No blood relationship was found - No in-law relationship was found

  Since you can only be connected if a relationship has been found that is misleading.

  It might be annoying to receive a message saying that "the system is overloaded" or simply "the search cannot be completed at this time" but giving what is clearly a false message is simply wrong.

  It looks like the new system is still very new and yes the error messages should be more clearer. I would like to thank you that you did test this feature out.

  Can you explain why there is a path to Gustav Vasa but not to his daughter?

  We have released a fix. If you still see the message that no path was found, it may still be cached. You will need to click on the refresh icon to recalculate the path.

  Thank you.  It seems to be transformed. I am working my way through more than 200 hits which were showing that I was connected but no relationship was found  They are starting to make and show the necessary connections. 

  I'm guessing that there was an error when the system stopped searching.and the caching then blocked me from making further searches.

  May I make a suggestion which is that you have a new error message which says something like:

           The search cannot be completed at this time please try again later (possibly specifying  a time)

  And at the same time the result should not be cached as "no relationship" but as "open search" to which a member can return.

  I look forward to completing some of the paths I was following.

  I am having this problem now. A bunch of my family tree links disappeared, along with paths...
