I tried clicking on a person's profile, but Geni is prompting to pay for membership. I'm trying to remove someone as a manger of a portion of my family tree. It's been discovered that this person thought they were related, but further research has fond that they are not. We both agree. So, how can I remove her as a manager, and replace her with me?

I have exactly the same question. I'm attempting to update information related to my great-great grandfather, but it's owned by an individual who is not directly related. He's indicated that I should be the owner but he sees no way to transfer ownership.
It would benefit Gini to provide this ability for non-paying members to improve the accuracy/breadth of family histories - thereby making paid memberships more compelling.
Are we out of luck here? Do we need to be a paying member? Is it even possible to update a manager?

You do not need a Pro subscription to add or remove managers from a profile. You can add, request management, or remove managers under the "Manager Options" in the Actions menu on profiles.
The profile managers can either add you as a manager of the profile(s) or you can request management of the profile(s) yourself. Please see the following FAQs:

The pull down menu does not offer manager options. I could only find option to collaborate. Has the manager option been removed? Most of the FAQ are from 2011!
You can only request management for profiles that are not users.
For user profiles you can use the Actions menu to ask for collaboration, for non-user profiles you can use it to request management (or remove yourself as a manager)
