Dear Geni Customer Service,

I created my family tree on Geni and added several relatives, including deceased family members.

I recently discovered in the Revisions history of the profile Bela Iticovici (Goldstein) that I was removed as a Profile Manager by Customer Service.

I am related to this person and would like to correct and maintain the genealogical information in this profile and other family profiles that I originally added to my tree.

Could you please explain why my Profile Manager rights were removed and let me know whether they can be restored?

  Hi Zeev, this was as the result of a cleanup in 2021 after a longstanding bug was fixed. When a user "claims" their profile with an email address and sets a password, the system is supposed to remove all managers because they are now in charge of their own profile. We discovered a few thousand profiles where there were lingering managers, so we ran a script to automatically remove them.

  If you relative has since passed away, then please report their account as Deceased by clicking on the Actions button on their profile page and select report. Choose "Deceased" in the dropdown and leave a comment.

  Once our customer service team reviews the report, they will be able to unclaim the account so that you may update the profile to reflect their passing.

  Hi,

  Thank you for your explanation.

  I understand that in 2021 Geni automatically removed managers from profiles that had been claimed by users.

  However, I created and maintain this family tree, and the people concerned are my relatives. I am trying to correct genealogical information in these profiles, but I can no longer edit some of them.

  Could you please clarify whether there is any way for me to regain permission to manage these profiles, or whether the profile owners must explicitly grant me permission?

  If the profile owners must grant permission, could you please explain how they can do this?

  I would appreciate your guidance on the best way to resolve this situation.

  Hi Zeev, yes, a claimed relative can update their own profile privacy settings to allow family members to edit their profile. 

  First your relative needs to log in to their account. Next, they can click on their name at the top right of the page and select "Privacy Settings."

  

  Next, check the box "Let my family edit my profile" and save changes.
